Abstract

Intimate partner violence (IPV) against the women has been identified as the violation of the human rights and a public health concern. The impact of physical and psychological violence on women is wide-ranging, long-term and involve more than just the victim. These effects vary from chronic diseases to mental health issues and reduced quality of life. The present study aims to explore the mental health of the women who have faced IPV. The qualitative research methodology was employed to explore the mental health of the women who have faced intimate partner violence. In-depth interviews were conducted with five married women who faced IPV, between the age ranges of 18 to 25 years. Purposive sampling strategy was used. Those participants who currently were going through abusive marriage were selected from lower socio-economic class. Thematic analysis approach has been used to generate themes. The results stated that the women were suffering from IPV in physical, emotional, psychological and sexual forms. The women who were facing mental illness due to IPV continued to bare violence and tried coping with it as women choose to stay with their abusive partner because of their lack of support from parents, financial dependence and children’s future. The current study is beneficial for the interventions to develop different training programs for the women to raise their voices being the victim of the IPV. Secondly, it is beneficial for breaking common barriers to addressing IPV for the women and focused on raising their voices when being victims of IPV.
